My husband always says everything happens for a reason. I think he may be right. (Don’t tell him I said that! icon wink K9 Connection Graduation {HeARTspeak Project} ) A few weeks ago, I photographed an awards ceremony for the Culver City News. It was an early morning event and I’m not a morning person at all, so it was a challenge getting up. Boy am I glad I did. One of the award recipients was the wonderful organization, K9 Connection, an experience-based program which educates and inspires at-risk teens through bonding with and training homeless shelter dogs. Each individual program serves counselor referred teens at participating schools, and concludes with a graduation ceremony and the placement of each dog in a permanent home. Our work then continues with monthly follow-up “check-ins” and student mentoring for all k9 connection graduates. The founders Katherine Beatie and Pat Sinclair were there to accept the award.

At the end of the event I debated on introducing myself. (I am shy, believe it or not and always have a hard time approaching folks about my photography. Even if it’s for a good cause.) At the very last minute I decided, what the heck and bit the bullet. I’m so glad I did, because these women are amazing. Today I had the day off and so I drove down to Venice to photograph their lastest graduating class. I’m so excited to do more.
